SANTIAGO. — The Baseball Operations Department of the Águilas Cibaeñas formally announced the contract renewal of Colombian manager Luis “Pipe” Urueta, who will return to lead the yellow squad for the 2026-27 season of the Dominican Professional Baseball League (LIDOM).
The front office’s decision is based on Urueta’s outstanding debut campaign with the Águilas, in which he reaffirmed his status as one of the most successful managers in the Caribbean basin. Under his leadership, the team achieved the best record in the previous regular season (32-17), a performance that earned him the LIDOM Manager of the Year award for the third time in his career.
A History of Success in LIDOM
Urueta, a native of Barranquilla, added this new accolade to a distinguished resume that already includes two previous Manager of the Year awards (2020-21 and 2021-22) and a national championship title.
He currently ranks as the sixth most winning foreign manager in LIDOM history, with a career record of 121-98. The elite group of the top five winning imported managers includes Dean Treanor (206-174), Dave Jauss (162-143), Hub Kittle (159-129), Tom Lasorda (153-136), and Lino Rivera (149-131).
Major League Experience
Urueta’s success in the Caribbean runs parallel to his rising career in the MLB system. After serving as bench coach for the Miami Marlins, he is currently part of the coaching staff of the Texas Rangers alongside manager Skip Schumaker.
His career highlights include several notable milestones:
- Historic achievement: First Colombian to manage a Major League game (2020, Arizona Diamondbacks).
- World Baseball Classic: Managed the Colombian national team in the 2017 World Baseball Classic.
- Player development: Served as Player Development Coordinator and bench coach (2020-2021) with the Arizona Diamondbacks.
“With this renewal, the Águilas Cibaeñas are betting on continuity and proven leadership from Urueta. Our goal is clear: to start working now to conquer our 23rd crown and bring that joy to our loyal fans,” emphasized the baseball operations department in the official statement.
